Head-turning Art

12 of our seniors just finished their 10-week long pose in the advance painting programme. One of them photographed the pieces and stringed them into an animated gif creating this one second long animation. Imagine how long it would take for these 12 artists to create a 90-minute animated feature film in oil. It'd take 55.5 years working on the project 24/7 !!

The artists:
Richard Davis, Richard Walker, Ashish Patel, Jeffrey Wood, Masako Kazue, Alvin Mark Tan, Alice Atoniacomi, Rishabh Sud, Nancy Wolfe, Saara Kauhenen, Dianna Talib & Mahlia Qureshi.

Here's another spinning model, but in graphite.

The Da Vinci Initiative (sponsored by the ARC)

One student of the programme, 17-year-old Yeats Ihrig, has gotten media attention for his style, focus and precision gained from his time in the Vosler Young Artists' Studio. As one of the five winner in the Smithsonian's Teen Portrait Competition, Yeats is now taking his artistic skill to the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.

Many of the student drawings are roughly based on the Bargue-Gérôme Drawing Course, a complete reprint of a famous last 19th century drawing course.  It contains 200 masterful lithographs of subjects for copying, The Da Vinci Initiative has prepared a Bargue Plate lesson plan for high school art students if you are interested in this teaching method for your classroom.

Losana and Llewellyn

(Written by Losana Boyd)

Our copy of Claudio Coello’s “The Triumph of St. Augustine” has been presented to the Canonry of St. Leopold, a community of Augustinian Canons Regular in Long Island, New York. The original, painted in 1664 for the Augustinian monastery in Acalá de Henares, is now on display in Madrid’s Museo del Prado.

In developing our painting, we utilized as much as possible the methods and pigments that Coello would have used, beginning with a wash drawing in umber on a gessoed linen canvas prepared with a mid-range campitura, and building up successive layers of paint and glazes to encourage richness of depth and luminosity.

As co-collaborators on this painting for the Canonry, part of our motivation was to restore, to some degree, the former tradition of artists working together on larger scale projects. As Catholic artists, we also want to make available images from our great Catholic treasury of sacred art to parishoners who might not otherwise have the opportunity to see examples of these works.
